Breaks and weekends that don’t have anything planned can be dull, or they can be intense. If you want a relaxing break, just let yourself have free rein and don’t plan anything. But some people “can’t just not do nothing”. These people prefer to plan things, go on errands, or do something intense. Sometimes my dad takes us to go on errands with him on the weekend, because he is the kind of person who likes to do intense things and be busy. Sometimes I like to be busy, but other times I like to relax more. Kids usually prefer to have free rein. Last Saturday, we didn’t have anything planned, so we just woke up, ate breakfast, played Playmobil, drank hot chocolate, and drew Pokemon. That was our morning. It was a nice relaxing morning.

Our family got our Christmas tree recently, and we loved decorating our Christmas tree together. I love the scent of the tree!
Once in a town called Altoville, there lived a small family. There was one boy and one girl, and they lived in a small red house with gingerbread trim. When they first moved in, they were looking around in their backyard and they saw a strange tree. The tree had strange fruit growing on it.
“Well what kind of fruit is that?” asked the mom.
“Yes, I sure don’t know. What do you kids think that fruit is?” the dad said in wonder.
“I think that it is an alvocado tree! Or maybe an orange tree! Or a lemon tree!” the girl said.
“I don’t know what it is! Maybe a lemon!” the boy said excitedly.
Years after the family moved in, the tree still grew and grew, and the fruits ripened and the family ate them. But they never figured out what kind of food grew on the tree. Maybe it was pizza!
What do you think the fruits were?
Why do why questions

The name Alexander Hamilton used to be literally unknown. But now, in 2016, Lin-Manuel Miranda told America the story of Hamilton, the hero of America.
Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical and Broadway show, Hamilton, touched the hearts of many in our nation to really know who Alexander Hamilton was and how he lived a life and changed history. I listen to the Lin-Manuel Miranda’s songs, and what I thought when I listened to the music for the first time was “How could our nation, America, forget Alexander Hamilton?”. Lin-Manuel Miranda had that thought when he read a book on vacation on Hamilton, and he was inspired to write the musical, Hamilton.
Alexander Hamilton was born sometime between 1755 and 1757 and died on July 12, 1804. He was born in the Caribbean, and later immigrated to the USA. He attended King’s College and later married Elizabeth Schuyler. His death cause was of a mortal wound that he got when Aaron Burr shot him.
I love Harry Potter, and I think that I have learned a lot from reading the series. It seems to me that every time you read through it again, you find more and more facts, feelings, and life skills.
4 life skills I found when reading Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone:
- Love and Caring. How many times Ron, Hermione, Dumbledore, and so many others in the world of Harry Potter cared, and loved? Dumbledore cared so much to send Hagrid to go get Harry when his parents died. I don’t really think the Dursleys would be included in this category though! 🙂
- Perseverance. Harry had to persevere to get his letter from Hogwarts, and also to find his classrooms at Hogwarts!
- Courage. Harry had to use courage to ask Mrs. Weasley how to get onto Platform 9 3/4, and he also had to use it when he was fighting Quirrell.
- Friendship. The friendship between Harry and Ron is strong starting in Chapter 6, but later on, because of the troll incident, Hermione becomes friends with Harry and Ron and they form a trio.
I read the book A Clatter of Jars by Lisa Graff. I thought that it was a very satisfying book. It is about a girl named Lily who goes to a camp called Camp Atropos, a camp for special kids with odd Talents. But these talents the kids have are not things like gymnastics or piano or spelling. These are weird Talents, special Talents. And what are Talent bracelets doing in the camp director Jo’s office? And why does Lily have a memory that doesn’t belong to her in her head? And on top of everything else, Lily wants her little brother, Max, to perform in the Talent show of Camp Atropos with her instead of with her annoying stepsister, Hannah. How will Lily handle this?
I made this Clementine Cake a couple days ago to celebrate the end of summer (even though it is a Christmas cake)! This cake is delicious, and the clementines make it sweet, soft, and moist.
If you use a springform pan, start checking to see if it is baked all the way at 35-40 minutes. I used two smaller cake pans and baked them in my toaster oven (toaster ovens cook faster than other ovens because they’re smaller) for 15 minutes. If you use two normal cake pans in a normal oven, you should start checking if the cakes are done at 20 minutes.
Here’s the recipe:
Clementine Cake Recipe
I followed Linda of Call me Cupcake’s Clementine cake recipe for the main cake. I changed the icing, so I am sharing that recipe here:
Emma’s Clementine icing
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- Juice from one clementine
- Juice from one lemon
- 2 tablespoons +1 teaspoon cream cheese
Clementine Icing Directions
- Sift the powdered sugar into a bowl.
- Add about two tablespoons of clementine juice and mix to a smooth paste. Add lemon juice. Add about a teaspoon of cream cheese. Add more clementine juice and cream cheese as necessary, until the frosting can easily be poured over your cake.
2. Pour the icing over the cake and spread lightly with a spoon. Top with candied clementines (see Linda’s recipe).
You’re done! Now you can enjoy your delicious clementine cake.
