If you go to Edinburgh, you will probably see a little statue of a dog, with a rubbed gold nose. And you will probably see right next to that dog a whole bunch of tourists. Why on Earth are people posing my a statue of a dog?
You will also have maybe read the book 44 Scotland Street, which has a dog named Cyril. (I recommend Alexander McCall Smith’s books–they’re very good and well written!) Edinburgh Castle even has a special soldier’s dog graveyard!
That dog is Greyfriar’s Bobby. Bobby was a Skye Terrier who belonged to a man named John Gray. When John Gray died and was buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard, Bobby stood watch over John Gray’s grave for 14 years until he died.
There are different versions of this story, and lots of different movies and books. There is a good Disney movie about it, and lots of books.
